Success strategies for the small business...

Business Plan

business plan is a statement of intent, a proof that you have considered all avenues:

  • What will you be selling and to whom
  • Why should they buy from you
  • How will you make money (your revenue streams)
  • How will you source and deliver your products/services.
  • How will you reach your clients.
  • How will you manage your business.
  • And how much money will you need upfront to survive and prosper and what will be the sources and applications of your funds.
  • When will you break even.
  • How and when will you repay your loans.

The purpose of a Business Plan

The purpose of the plan is to demonstrate to yourself, your partners, bank, investors and other stakeholders that you have thought through, planned and considered what might happen in your business.

It is nothing more than a prediction of how the business will do, based on a series of best guesses and assumptions around finance, markets, management, products, competition and the economy as a whole.

There are many guides to writing business plans around, in fact too many. Most of them just leave you bewildered and confused. So most budding entrepreneurs either skip a business plan altogether or employ a consultant who writes it for them.

People often ask us –  Why do I need to write a business plan? Who is it for?

Well, primarily it is for you.

The reality is that most business plans, irrespective how well written, don’t come true.

Simon Woodroffe, one of the Dragons from the “Dragons’ Den” once said :

“If you want to make God laugh, show him your business plan”.

Does this  mean that you shouldn’t bother with writing one?

Absolutely not! The real reason behind the plan is to show that you are a serious entrepreneur and not just a dreamer.
